Bonnie Hunt coming to daytime

One of my all time favorites, the dry and quick witted Bonnie Hunt, is getting her own talk show in 2008! She's one of those actresses who elevates everything she's in, even if only for a cameo. She's also one of those faces you know but may not know her name (the voice of the cute Porsche in Cars, the toothpick waitress in Rain Man, the tour guide in Dave, the sister in Jerry Maguire).

She's hilarious, sarcastic and everyone loves her - the perfect host. She did some fill-in work for Letterman while he was out having heart surgery and has subbed in on Regis & Kelly a few times, so she's had some practice. Let's hope this is finally the niche she needs to make her a household name.

Oh boy

I just finished watching the pilot of Journeyman and all I can say is - YES!!! What a fantastic show! It has a great concept, great production values, great writing, great pacing and great acting. It also has found that balance that Heroes has where it gives away just enough of the mystery to make you want more, but without being frustratingly vague or slow (like Lost).

I was the world's biggest fan of Quantum Leap, and in a lot of ways Journeyman reminds me of it. We have a hero who time travels to help people but has no control over when or where he goes and doesn't know exactly what it is he's supposed to do. It's less silly (so far) than Quantum Leap, and the rules seem to be a bit different (he can go home, he leaps as himself) but it is the same basic premise. I can't wait to find out more about the why and how of the time travel aspect, and with such a compelling lead (Kevin McKidd from HBO's Rome) it will be an entertaining wait.

p.s. On a completely unrelated note, tivoguy is quite upset at the moment. It seems the best part about one of his guilty pleasure shows has changed. The Unit had a short but snappy theme song with a kind of military chant that he looked forward to every week. We just started the new season premiere and they CHANGED the song! Why would they do that?

The curse of Tivo

I've had a Tivo since year one. I have three Tivos and five total tuners. I watch a LOT of television, but very little of it is live. (Just about the only thing I don't shift is NFL football, because inevitably a big score or play is spoiled when I'm watching my fantasy team. But I digress...) It's fantastic - I can watch what I want, when I want, on my own schedule.

But sometimes it can be a curse. Sometimes it leaves you out of the water cooler talk. More than a few times I have run away from my coworkers, hands over my ears, yelling "I haven't watched it yet! It's on my Tivo! Don't tell me!" and have missed out on that morning after dialogue that can be so fun. I have learned from it, however. There are certain shows that I shift, but still make sure I watch the same night: Heroes, American Idol, South Park, Earl and The Office are the staples in my television pantry. These are the shows that everyone wants to talk about, and get my opinion on, the next morning.

Sure, some of them have Tivo, too, but then you have to coordinate the shift schedule. That defeats the whole purpose and frankly, it's just wrong. So I do my duty, and I pause for 20 minutes of commercial buffer before diving in. I figure it's the least I can do to help the cause.

Dear TV Network Honchos

Please move some of the stuff you have on Monday to another night. There is too much good stuff on at once, and that's not cool. I have three Tivos with five total tuners and I just can't get it all, let alone watch it in a reasonable time. It just means that I'm going to miss out if I choose poorly, or that something good will get cancelled when it fails to beat Heroes. Just move some stuff to Wednesday when there's nothing good on anyway and we'll all be happy.

Thank you,
tivogirl

Moonlight - ing

Are you thinking about watching that new show Moonlight because you're totally into vampire stuff and it kinda reminds you of this cool show Forever Knight that used to be on late at night back in the 90s? Don't. It sucks.

The premise is almost identical to Forever Knight, but while that was a cheesy, Canadian, low-budget yet entertaining show, Moonlight is a cheesy, overwrought, horribly acted and poorly written piece of crap. I'll be surprised if it makes it three episodes. (But then again, Two and a Half Men is the top rated sitcom on television. ::shudder::)

You have been warned...

Tonight's Family Guy...

... Best. Episode. Ever.

Yes, I am a huge SW geek. No, Robot Chicken is NOT a real show.

One more shot for Survivor

I was one of the first big Survivor fans, but after the fifth season I just quit watching. I always check out the premiere, but usually bail out before the third episode or so. The concept has just gotten stale, and the "twists" are really just gimmicks that are quickly abandoned. The series quickly turns back into the backstabbing juvenile behavior fest it has become over the years. The reality genre is so oversaturated with wannabes now that it is incredibly difficult to continue to cast great contestants, and that's where the strength - or weakness - of a show lies.

But every year on day one, I'm there. And tonight will be no exception. Part of my curiosity this time is that I have actually been to the setting - China. Granted, it was Hong Kong and not the rugged wilderness where the survivors will likely be camping out, but I feel like I have some knowledge of the culture. There also is a local tie - an openly gay Mormon flight attendant from Pleasant Grove. Sounds like a description straight out of the CBS press department to me. The last Utahn on the show was the cute but embarassing Neleh Dennis, who introduced the world to the phrase "Oh my heck" and was runner-up on Survivor: Marquesas, season four. (Rumor has it she blew all her winnings on a Hummer.)
