New shows I'll be trying out

I'm a bit late with this post thisyear, but most of the new stuff hasn't started yet. Except Fox. Where most of the new stuff is crap.

My two exceptions there are hit-or-miss, but I'll give them another few shows before I remove them from the season pass list. One is Standoff, a comedy/drama about hostage negotiators who are sorta dating, but also partners. The stars are appealing and the writing is kinda snappy, and it's on after House on Tuesdays. The other is the Brad Garrett/Joely Fisher sitcom Til Death, about a newleywed couple who moves in next door to the long-married stars. The pilot was a stretch and the laugh track distracting, but I like the two leads and will give it another go. It's on Thursdays, so I may have to give it up in two weeks when Earl and The Office come back.

Here are the other newbies starting up that I'll be trying out...

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: Aaron Sorkin's new show about the production of a Saturday Night Live-style live comedy. It stars Amanda Peet and Matthew Perry (who also worked together in the Whole Nine Yards and Whole Ten Yards). If it's more like Sports Night than The West Wing, I'll love it. Premieres Monday, 9/18, NBC

Knights of Prosperity: A group of guys decide to finance their dreams by robbing Mick Jagger. Premieres Tuesday, 10/17, ABC

The Nine: A drama about the aftermath of a bank robbery and what happens to the 9 hostages who went through it. Even if it sucks, it's on after Lost and will stick around for a while. Premieres Wednesday, 10/4, ABC

20 Good Years: A sitcom about two aging bachelors who figure they have 20 good years left to enjoy life. Stars John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor, so I'm there. Premieres Wednesday, 10/11, NBC

Jericho: This mystery/drama could be this season's Lost. A small town in Kansas witnesses what appears to be a nuclear detonation on the horizon, then is cut off from the outside world with no idea what's going on. Premieres Wednesday, 9/20, CBS

Ugly Betty: Producer Salma Hayek brings this popular Mexican sitcom to the U.S. I'm curious. Premieres Thursday, 9/28, ABC

Shark: James Woods goes from cagey defense attorney to prosecutor. Cool. Premieres Thursday, 9/21, CBS

Unfortunately, that's about all I see that looks worthwhile for the first half of the season. The good news is most of my favorite new shows are back (Prison Break, The Amazing Race, Lost)! For premiere dates on those, and the full grid for the fall schedule, check out Futon Critic.
