Emmy reactions

Now that I've had time to digest the list a bit (see last entry for link), I have some thoughts...

Drama Series: "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; "House," Fox; "The Sopranos," HBO; "24," Fox; "The West Wing," NBC.

Notice anything missing there? Where the HELL is LOST?! Okay, so House and 24 were rock solid this season, but Sopranos was weak, The West Wing is gone and Grey's Anatomy is just a soapy clone of ER with bad actors. One of those three spots should've gone to Lost, which followed up a spectacular first season with an equally riveting sophomore year.

Comedy Series: "Arrested Development," Fox; "Curb Your Enthusiasm," HBO; "The Office," NBC; "Scrubs," NBC; "Two and a Half Men," CBS.

With one exception (I'll let you guess), an admirable list. I'd love to see Arrested get it just to poke Fox in the eye one last time. Two of my other faves are here - Office and Scrubs - but where's My Name is Earl?

Actor, Drama Series: Denis Leary, "Rescue Me," FX Network; Peter Krause, "Six Feet Under," HBO; Kiefer Sutherland, "24," Fox; Martin Sheen, "The West Wing," NBC.

Go Denis Leary! From misunderstood stand-up comic to brilliant series creator - who knew?

Actress, Drama Series: Kyra Sedgwick, "The Closer," TNT; Geena Davis, "Commander in Chief," ABC; Mariska Hargitay, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," NBC; Frances Conroy, "Six Feet Under," HBO; Allison Janney, "The West Wing," NBC.

Supporting Actress, Drama Series: Candice Bergen, "Boston Legal," ABC; Sandra Oh, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; Chandra Wilson, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; Blythe Danner, "Huff," Showtime; Jean Smart, "24," Fox.

Actress, Comedy Series: Lisa Kudrow, "The Comeback," HBO; Jane Kaczmarek, "Malcolm in the Middle," Fox; Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "The New Adventures of Old Christine," CBS; Stockard Channing, "Out of Practice," CBS; Debra Messing, "Will & Grace," NBC.

Supporting Actress, Comedy Series: Cheryl Hines, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," HBO; Alfre Woodard, "Desperate Housewives," ABC; Jaime Pressly, "My Name Is Earl," ABC; Elizabeth Perkins, "Weeds," Showtime; Megan Mullally, "Will & Grace," NBC.

Really? THIS is the best you could come up with? Most of these people aren't even on tv anymore (deservedly so)! I see two decent choices in four categories - Jaime Pressly (who is hilarious on Earl) and Jean Smart (who had an AMAZING comeback role on 24). Sad.

Actor, Comedy Series: Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," HBO; Kevin James, "The King of Queens," CBS; Tony Shalhoub, "Monk," USA; Steve Carell, "The Office," NBC; Charlie Sheen, "Two and a Half Men," CBS.

Not bad - glad to see Kevin James on the list. Too bad he's up against Steve Carell, who will walk away with this (and should). Sorry, Monk fans, I like Tony Shalhoub but he overacts on this show, and Larry David is overrated. I don't think I need to say a thing about Charlie Sheen.

Supporting Actor, Drama Series: William Shatner, "Boston Legal," ABC; Oliver Platt, "Huff," Showtime; Michael Imperioli, "The Sopranos," HBO; Gregory Itzin, "24," Fox; Alan Alda, "The West Wing," NBC.

Supporting Actor, Comedy Series: Will Arnett, "Arrested Development," Fox; Jeremy Piven, "Entourage," HBO; Bryan Cranston, "Malcolm in the Middle," Fox; Jon Cryer, "Two and a Half Men," CBS; Sean Hayes, "Will & Grace," NBC.

This is more like it! A few duds in the bunch, but Oliver Platt, Michael Imperioli, Greg Itzin, Alan Alda, Will Arnett, Jeremy Piven and Bryan Cranston are all deserving. I'm rooting for Alda and Piven (who absolutely MAKES Entourage).

I won't bother going over the miniseries and tv movie categories. Frankly, who cares? It's just a bunch of movie actors who are either padding the resume or who aren't good enough to win an Oscar. I do, however, have a few words about the "reality-competition" nominees...

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program: The Amazing Race - CBS, American Idol - Fox, Dancing With the Stars - ABC, Project Runway - Bravo, Survivor - CBS.

Gee, who do you think I'm rooting for? Naturally, I think the Amazing Race is still the best reality show out there and deserves to win (again) but I wouldn't be disappointed if Project Runway took this one. I feel I had a little part in its discovery and it really is a fun show.

Just one final note - the infamous Trapped in the Closet episode of South Park was nominated for best animated program. (You know, the one Tom Cruise freaked out about and seemingly successfully got banned from the rerun cycle.) You go, Matt and Trey!

I'll post my picks a few weeks before the Emmys, so check back.
